
When he was 27, he enrolled at the National Theatre School of Denmark where he graduated in 1995. He also appeared in The Killing, a drama series that aired around the globe. He then appeared in Those Who Kill II and Borgen III, two other popular Danish dramas. He also played an important role in Sherlock, an BBC drama where was the character Charles Augustus Magnussen, whose blackmailer. He played the role of the Russian president in the American TV show House of Cards. In 2018, he was awarded an International Emmy Award for his part as the Russian president in the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. This was broadcast in the UK as Ride Upon the Storm in the year 2019. Mikkelsen can speak fluent English, Swedish, German and Danish in addition to his native language. He also has learned various accents. According to Mikkelsen's testimony that he and his brother were taught English by studying Monty Python records.
